Whether you're are building a new home or your town has provided access to the municipal sewer system, it is usually the home or business owners responsibility to make the connection. If you have your own septic system, in most cases, it cannot simply be abandoned. It is your responsibility to remediate (disable and safely secure) that system to ensure you don't have tank collapse, sink holes and other health and safety issues.

Most municipalities require that a permit(s) be obtained from the water/sewer department, health department and/or the building department. Applications must be submitted along with diagrams or engineers plans for the connection, contractor information, insurance certificates and prepaid fees. Inspections must be scheduled upon completion or at various points during the connection process.
